Non-Licensable Work with Asbestos & Asbestos Awareness (IATP)

Who should attend?

Any person who in the course of their work activities may be called upon to plan the works, interact with or remove ACMs falling into the non-licensable categories.

Course Aims & Objectives

This course provides the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to delegates who will knowingly disturb asbestos containing materials during the course of their work activities, including building maintenance workers and supervisory personnel, and building maintenance managers. Successful completion of the course will allow delegates to undertake asbestos non licensed works in accordance with the Control of Asbestos regulations 2012 and all associated Codes of practice

Training is in accordance with Regulation 10 of Work with materials containing asbestos, Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, Approved Code of Practice and guidance (L143) and Equipment and Methods Sheet EM2 of Asbestos essentials: A task manual for building, maintenance and allied trades on non-licensed asbestos work (Second edition) (HSG210)

Course Outline

Prior to each non-licensed work with asbestos training course; training needs analysis must be undertaken to ensure that the course (included equipment & method and task sheets) is relevant to delegates requirements.

By the end of the course, delegates should be able to:

  • Recognise why asbestos is dangerous
  • Know the different types of asbestos and their properties
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of asbestos applications – the places and materials in which it is used
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of Asbestos Related Legislation
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the Equipment and Method Sheets contained in HSG210 ‘Asbestos Essentials’
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the Task Sheets associated with ‘ Work with asbestos cement (AC) (non-licensed)’ contained in HSG210 ‘Asbestos Essentials’
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the Task Sheets associated with ‘ Working with textured coatings (TC) containing asbestos (non-licensed)’ contained in HSG210 ‘Asbestos Essentials’
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the Task Sheets associated with ‘Safe work with undamaged asbestos materials)’ contained in HSG210 ‘Asbestos Essentials’
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the Task Sheet associated with ‘Fly tipped waste)’ contained in HSG210 ‘Asbestos Essentials’
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the Task Sheets associated with ‘Strictly controlled minor work on asbestos insulating board (AIB)’ contained in HSG210 ‘Asbestos Essentials’
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the Task Sheets associated with ‘Removal and replacement of other asbestos containing materials’ contained in HSG210 ‘Asbestos Essentials’

 There will be a practical element to this course which means hands-on training where delegates practice going through procedures, usually in a simulated environment. For example:

  • carrying out decontamination procedures as detailed in EM8
  • trying out RPE to ensure a good face-fit and knowing how to carry out maintenance checks
  • use of wetting techniques and H-type Vacuums
  • bagging of waste.

Certification

A timed, invigilated, closed-book written examination will be individually completed by each learner at the end of the course, with 80% being the pass mark. On successful completion, delegates will be issued with a IATP Certificate which is valid for 12 months, after which the IATP Non-Licensable Work with Asbestos Refresher course can be taken.
